East Asia before the West: Was it an International System?

David Kang, Director of the Korean Studies Institute and Professor at the University of Southern California, discussed the main points of his latest book East Asia before the West: Five Centuries of Trade and Tribute through the context of war. He asserted that the relative peace that existed in East Asia before the arrival of the West is one indicator that the region followed practices associated with the modern international system.
