Poland suffered unprecedented destruction and human loss resulting from World War II. Nearly 6 million Polish citizens were murdered. That number included over 3 million Polish Jews - more than 90 percent of the pre-War Jewish population. This presentation by Anna Sommer-Schneider will examine America's assistance for the Holocaust survivors in post-war Poland, the struggle to maintain the "surviving remnant," rebuilding of the foundations of Jewish life, and the anti-Jewish violence followed by the mass exodus of Jewish populations from Poland. The responses of the US government to the mass infiltration of Polish Jewish refugees to DP camps in Germany will also be a subject for analysis.
