A group of leftwing secular Jewish intellectuals who fled their native Vienna before WWII, became refugees, and fought with the Allied forces decided to return to Vienna after the war, believing they could help rebuild the country as a place where it could never happen again. Deborah Tannen interviews Ruth Wodak and Georg Schoenfeld, whose parents were members of that group.

Ruth Wodak is the current Royden B. Davis, S.J. Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Department of linguistics. She comes to Georgetown from Lancaster University, UK, where she has been Distinguished Professor Discourse Studies since 2004.

Georg Schoenfeld is an award winning architect based in Vienna, Austria.
