It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Barbara Freyer Stowasser on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was surrounded by friends and family. Dr. Stowasser was Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies from 1994 to 2012 (though her service to Georgetown University extends back to 1966 when she began lecturing in the Arabic Department), holder of the Sultanate of Oman Chair in Arabic and Islamic Literature at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, a core member of the faculty of CCAS, and thrice director of the Center. Dr. Stowasser was a leading world scholar in studies of women in the Qur’an and hadith, and a colleague of rare intellect, compassion, and humor. Her expertise and influence shall be sorely missed.

The family has expressed its wish to hold a memorial service at Georgetown University in the late summer or early fall, and details shall be forthcoming. The faculty, staff, and students of CCAS express our deepest sympathies with her family, grieving her loss at this time.

Those who wish to share memories of Dr. Stowasser are invited to do so below.

Request for Student Guest Speakers

Voice of America Urdu is launching Facebook Live Events that allow for dialogue between Pakistanis and Americans, giving them a venue to discuss issues ranging from education and politics to social media and entertainment. We want to give young people from America and Pakistan the chance to discuss things that are relevant to them. This event will be an informal discussion that will be aired live on VOA Urdu’s Facebook, hosted by Urdu TV’s Ayesha Tanzeem.

We are looking to bring a few students from Georgetown University that would be interested in speaking as guests at the event. It would be preferable to have students that are Urdu speakers, because the event will be mainly viewed in Pakistan, but if that is not possible English would work as well. Pakistani viewers will post questions to VOA Urdu’s Facebook for the event, and the host will then ask these questions to the guest speaker. The language of this particular discussion will be dictated by the language of the guest speaker- either English or Urdu.

For the first event, we are looking for students with an academic background and interest in US-Pakistan relations- preferably those majoring in International Relations or a related field. They will be asked questions posed by the Pakistani audience about the US-Pakistan relationship, and the discussion will be primarily geared towards US policy in Pakistan, US views on Pakistan, and similar issues.

We will be streaming our first event Friday May 11th from the Auditorium at Voice of America at 330 Independence Ave., S.W. The specific time has not yet been determined.

If interested, please contact Hannah Grossblatt at hgrossblatt@voanews.com, or 202-382-5749.

Do you want to be an unusually effective first year teacher in a high-poverty charter school?

If so, you should consider MATCH Teacher Residency–an innovative, one-year teacher residency program.

Basically, we give recent college graduates one year of intense training. We then help them find positions in high-need schools, and continue to support them as they begin their careers in the classroom.

What sets MTR apart from other teacher prep programs? 1) We’re prescriptive, like a sports coach or piano teacher; you learn and practice very specific “Teacher Moves.” 2) Trainees are specifically being prepared to teach in certain charter schools with a track record of “turning around” low-performing kids. 3) We have a very particular approach, which involves building relationships 1-on-1 with kids and parents, then using those relationships to run a tight ship in class, enforcing rules consistently, and pushing/demanding a LOT from our kids.

MTR is no different from the MATCH Corps (our full-time tutoring program) from Monday to Thursday. However, unlike MATCH Corps, MTRs want to go on to become full-time teachers in high-poverty, “No Excuses” charter schools. So on Fridays and Saturdays, MTRs learn about the nuts and bolts of teaching, do tons of practice, and get a lot of coaching.

We’re especially proud of our brand new elementary school, MATCH Community Day, which specifically serves students who speak a language other than English at home. MATCH Teacher Residents have the option to serve at MATCH Community Day, or our previously established High School or Middle School. For more information on MATCH Community Day, have a look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGUV8Jbeu-c
